Since a single Cecropia tree can produce more than a million seeds in a season it is a major food source for many fruit eaters: aracaris, toucans and other birds, sloths, fruit bats, opossums, and monkeys. Not for nothing the tree is called “The Restaurant” of the Forest”.
The seeds remain viable for as long as five years, only germinating when exposed to direct sunlight.
