The mountain almond tree is a protected tree species that provides food for at least 60 species of birds, monkeys and bats.
Costa Rica has banned the felling of this tree to protect the green macaw, an endangered species. In the Nicoya Peninsula, efforts are being made to reintroduce the scarlet macaw, for whom the almond fruit is a very important source of food.
